I've been a cop for twelve years -- the last seven in homicide. I like homicide. It's not as arbitrary as vice, clamping down on human weakness, that kind of thing. Not that we shouldn't... I mean, there's some real victims there, especially when kids are involved. And the sick fucks feeding on 'em. Predators... That kind of thing. But it's sad. Pathetic. I did that for three years in Cleveland. That was a nice place to leave. I mean, not the city itself -- just the whole vice thing. In homicide, it's more clear cut. I mean, someone is dead, so there you are. What human need was fulfilled in that? Well, I mean, there's the occasional necro thing, but that's rare. I've heard stories, but never actually been on one of those. Usually it's pointless. Domestic or gangs... Drugs. First couple of years here, I worked narcotics. That was okay. We went after the dealers -- the houses. None of those possession things -- I mean, unless it was with intent, you know? But this homicide thing... The victims are so young now. Like twelve, thirteen. They get in with that street stuff, and before you know it, they're dead. Laying in some alley behind Freemont or something, with a clip load in their back. Their life's over because they stepped on the wrong sidewalk or something. And the guy who pulled the trigger... His life's over too, basically. For nothin'. There's no point to none of it. It gets... Not really old, but like it grinds on you, without your even realizing it. Blocks up your insides. Lot of cops walking around like that. Lot of 'em... Well, I've known a few guys... They go home one night, and just put the gun in their mouth. You know, it gets like... I mean, I'm just about ready to chuck it all too. Move back to Baltimore and take up with my ex-wife again. Even though she was heavy into Janis Joplin. But, you know, we used to smoke a lot of pot back then. Yeah... Actually, I could go for some old Cream about now. "White Room" or "Badge." Classic stuff. "Sunshine of Your Love." That was all back when... I mean, before things got so complicated, you know? The time goes so fast, it just gets away from you. Man... Seems like only yesterday... Like, Derek and the Dominos, Layla. Now, there's an album.
