THEATRE OF OPERATIONS: TALES FROM VESTIBRIÜM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
by Marc Weber
A General Sense of Unbeknownstment (in the Sixth Degree)

DR. SÜURD, M.D.: Well, if our legacy is to continue... I mean, you and I can't keep piloting this ship indefinitely. I'm nearly as blind as a bat, and my memory is... Well, if I weren't such an esteemed surgeon... I mean, a lesser man wouldn't continue to operate under these conditions.

DR. KÖRDANN, M.D.: Yes, well...

SÜURD: Any hope for the new guy? The resident?

KÖRDANN: He seems a bit reserved. Not much personality. He might be okay if he loosens up a bit.

SÜURD: I see. But what about his surgical technique?

KÖRDANN: That's what I meant. Of course, he's still coming out of anesthesia. I put him under a bit deep for that procedure last week. Almost lost him.

Plate 9: A pan troglodyte observes the procedure from a sterile control room. (Dr. Sürrd's private collection.)

SÜURD: Hmmm... Well, you know how I feel about anesthesia. I once knocked a patient cold with a monkey wrench applied neatly to the cranilar mesapentium. Of course, when I say "monkey," I mean that in a generic sense. Any number of primates might be implied. The Pan troglodyte, for example, has demonstrated an uncanny ability to utilize simple tools under the most...

KÖRDANN: That's not true.

SÜURD: I assure you it is. The Pan troglodyte's capacity for...

KÖRDANN: No, I mean about knocking a patient cold. What the heck is a "cranilar mesypentum"?

SÜURD: Oh... I must have meant the craniumiullium penilariumota. I mean, it's rare nowadays, but in its prime...

KÖRDANN: Anyway, that new guy is a surgical fellow -- not a resident.

SÜURD: Hmmm... I may be a trifle out of sorts by today's unholy standards, but I know a fellow when I see one. Remember, I'm a doctor.
